My first grade students live in the Bronx. They come from Yemen, Dominican Republic, Bangladesh and Mexico. Many were born here in NY, but come from homes where English is not spoken. Many students in my class struggle with literacy skills. They struggle with reading comprehension and decoding skills. They have a very limited vocabulary in English and many do not have strong literacy skills in their native language. Some have had very little exposure to literature. The class size is 32 students and one teacher.
