My students are predominantly Hispanic and African American from low socioeconomic standings. They go to an urban public school in Illinois that has wonderful teachers but is not always able to provide them with all of the best resources that they need to succeed. My students are full of joy, curiosity, and hard work for things that they are engaged in.
A passion for reading is a trait that I try to instill in my students each day at school. We have 3 daily reading rounds where children decide what literacy activities they want to do with pre-set parameters, of course. Students work independently while I coach students in small groups. Because I give them autonomy to decide their activities, and they are able to pick out their own "good fit books" from our classroom library or on the computer, these reading rounds are typically the highlight of their day. It is a time where they can sit back, relax, and enjoy a good book or a related activity.
