I teach at a STEM Magnet school with a population high in English Language Learners and low socioeconomic status. Our school is a chance for these students to be exposed to and experience STEM education at a high level. It is a place where they "do and experience" their education rather than just listen to it. They have access to technology, science labs, multimedia labs and highly qualified and motivated teachers. One trait that my students lack is proficiency in working together and problem solving. Part of the new Common Core Standards expects students to be able to do just that. Since students need motivation to get them started on something that will, at first be challenging to them, I have created my Problem Solving and Social Skills project.
