Some students need extra help to regulate their minds and bodies in order to do their best learning. Neuroscience research shows that emotional regulation is critical to our brains being able to learn new information. The special education students I work with want to learn, however they need help regulating their emotions and bodies each day in order to do their best learning.
These supplies will allow our school to create a sensory space where small groups of students can receive social skills instruction in conjunction with mindfulness exercises. My goal is to teach students the skills they need to be successful in school and life by providing an environment that is calm and engaging. Students will receive guided yoga instruction to prepare their bodies, participate in shared reading of mindfulness books, and practice social skills through playing games. This can also be a place to start classwork or refocus during stressful times of the day.
