I would love to add a class set of ukuleles to my classroom instrument collection! I would use these instruments in the upper grades to teach rhythm, harmony, and melodic concepts as well as an appreciation for music from around the world. In addition to the xylophones, small percussion instruments, and our own singing voices, ukuleles will add another layer of sound color to our classroom music making.
Imagine walking into a music class where 5th grade students are practicing chord progressions and getting to play along with some of their favorite songs from the radio? Or a class of 4th graders working on strumming patterns using a new rhythm they have learned? Or even a group of 3rd graders accompanying a folk song with open string strumming? Ukuleles would give my students so many opportunities for enrichment at any level of musicianship.
