My students are excited and ready to explore the world! They ask questions about everything and are eager to dive into class projects to make models of things and learn how they work. Books are wonderful and we read lots of books. That being said, children learn by "doing", so we must have a balance of books and experiences. We can read about the Earth, space, plants and pumpkins, but then we need to make models of the Earth, plant a garden of seeds, and cut open a pumpkin to explore the inside!
At the tender age of five, many of my students already know what it is like to do without. When they enter my classroom, I want them to be excited, feel a sense of belonging, and know that their mind and dreams of the future are unstoppable!
