I teach at a Title 1 school in California. Our school serves a very high number of second language students, many of whom come from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. Most are served by the federal free or reduced price breakfast and lunch program. They possess a wide range of reading levels. It isn't uncommon in my third grade classroom to have reading levels that range from pre-k to 5th grade. Most of them live in apartments or mobile homes, often with other families. They already have a limited amount of space available to them, and crowded classroom conditions have made school a difficult place to navigate.
