Having E-Readers through the Kindle Fire will be such an asset to my classroom in several ways.
First and foremost, it will expose students to digital means of literacy, especially for my reluctant readers. I would love to say that every child loves picking up a book and taking it for a spin, but in my experience that does not work for every child. I think allowing students to read through a variety of modalities is a great responsibility of teachers. I need to find that book title or source of reading that hooks my students into becoming lifelong readers. If students enjoy reading digitally rather than a traditional book, then I need to find a way to supply that need. My goal will always remain the same. I want my students to become better readers and thinkers, but how they develop that can be based on what they need. E-readers can help with that!
Along those same lines, I think as a teacher it is my responsibility to use several medias for reading from a traditional paper book to e-Readers in a classroom. I need to be supporting my students by teaching 21st century skills, where technology is heavily involved. Students needs to be able to access print digitally. Just as they are expected to know concept of print in pre-k and kindergarten, so should our students have concept of digital print. Having E-readers will help me better prepare my students for what might be to come in their futures.
Also, through the Kindle app store, I'll be able to download educational apps students can access throughout the school day to support different academic areas, such as social studies, science, and art.
