My students come from a poor Hispanic area with very little access to books or the joy of reading. They love to sit around my ankles and listen to the latest misadventures of their favorite characters. My school is a title one school with 98 % free and reduced lunch students. Their families are mostly migrant workers who are unable to read to their children in English. They also have little knowledge of the geography of the country they live in. What better way to foster both their love of reading and expand their knowledge of the geography of the United States than with a large colorful carpet that shows them the beautiful fifty states?!
