My students are future lawyers, social workers, physicists, nurses, moms, and dads. My students are musicians, debaters, creative writers, farmers, facebookers, restaurant hostesses, martial artists, inventors, actors and athletes. Our school, opened in 1908 and still uses its main building for students. Most might characterize our community as farmers and hippies. This is a myopic view because we are so much more; we do not fit nicely into those boxes created to label and reduce. My students study critical reading and writing, language and literary theory. They challenge each other and me to be better or more innovative. The labels I would use to describe our student body are cohesive and quirky, creative and critical.
