An author study is a unit lesson that gives students the opportunity to delve deeply into an author’s life and body of work. One of the primary benefits of an author’s study is to arouse a child’s interest in literature. Children’s interest in reading is stimulated when they are made aware of the people behind the creation of the books: the authors, illustrators, and translators. An author’s study is one of the most effective ways to develop this awareness in children. Whether individually, in small groups, or as a class, students can: critically evaluate an author’s themes, characters, and writing style; make connections between the author’s life and work; make personal connections between their own experiences and those of the author and his/her characters. In addition to reading several works by an author, key components of an author study include discussion, research, and a final project.
I will be using these books for interactive reading, shared reading and for small group with my students. These books will also be placed in the reading center where students will be able to read the books independently, to or with a partner. When used with small groups this enriches oral language development through modeled reading, through risk-free participation by the children in subsequent readings and discussions, and through the meaningful teaching of skills within context.
