I have to start by saying that the school where I teach is very special to me. It was the same elementary school I attended as a child. The neighborhood has changed but the feeling you get when you are there has not. The building itself was built in 1944 and has been added as one of the cities' historical monuments.
You will find a "melting pot" of students here that care for one another and are not afraid to show where they are from. We are a Title I school and 90% are on free or reduced lunch. They come from broken homes or families that have been separated because they came to the US looking for a better life. Yet this does not stop their eagerness to learn and succeed. For some, the language barrier seems difficult but yet I see their love for it and what they can become.
