On the first day of the school year, I named my advisory class The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. The league consists of twenty boys 6th grade boys that join me every morning for an hour of literacy and mathematics intervention before beginning their regular academic schedule. Our school is an urban green school planted in the middle of a food desert. This collection of young men are at least a grade level below in reading and math. Two of the gentlemen in my group are autistic and within the remaining 18 there are several who are enrolled in the special education program and many that have serious health and attendance issues.
