Nothing creates a more positive impact on learning and student achievement than computer technology in the classroom. Yet for many students, the implementation of technology in any form is an elusive dream, especially for the 5th grade students in my urban, inner city, Pennsylvania, 5th grade classroom.
Crippled under the weight of poverty in Philadelphia, my public school suffers under the erosion of local funding tied to continued budget constraints. Working in the 5th grade, my teaching duties include the delivery of instruction across all curriculum. In spite of the low socioeconomic conditions in this community, the children put forth a valiant effort and meet the demands of No Child Left Behind. However, additional resources, in the form of computer technology, would further increase student achievement and create a whole new dimension of learning for my students.
