Manipualtives are a favorite activity in our classroom. Not only do they allow my students to strengthen their fine motor and problem solving skills, they also allow them to build relationships with their peers. Many of my students have limited verbal skills or are completely non verbal.
My students are able to engage in parallel, cooperative and imaginary play while playing with manipulatives. This also gives them the opportunity to practice important social skills such as sharing, turn taking and communication, in whatever form that may be.
Currently we have three sets of manipulatives we use daily, but we need more variety to keep students engaged and to challenge them at varying levels of difficulty to improve their fine motor skills.
