I have 6th graders who have made the transition from elementary school to middle school. That transition is easier for some, but has a large effect on most. It is a concern that we believe affects everything in their school year, all the way to their test scores. Anything familiar to the student seems to help with that. Programs, like the computer programs the county shares in all schools, help provide that familiarity they are searching for--the "I got this" mentality. This is something the students recognize and feel comfortable with doing. My students range from the advanced to below basic, all together in a classroom on any given hour. The challenge is to find ways to provide extra help to those who need it, and challenge to those who are bored. Computer programs are a valuable way to provide some differentiation so desperately needed.
