My classroom consists of five students with autism. They vary in age between the ages of 3 and 4 years old. I have two students who are non-verbal and three students with a range of language.
All of the students in my class use the Picture Exchange Communication System in which they use pictures to request wanted items. They are learning to gain the attention of adults and peers to have their wants and needs met in a variety of settings. Our school is specifically designed for students with special needs at the preschool level. Our class is made up of only students with autism but their personalities and abilities are very different. We have three students who are brand new to the program and are trying to adjust to the new classroom. We have another student who has limited play, communication, and academic skills but she is full of smiles all day. The final student in our class is a great model for his peers. He has more verbal language than the others.
