My students are in preschool. They attend a public school in a big city. It's easy for anyone, especially children, to get lost in the hustle and bustle of everyday life in the city. This holds especially true for children living in impoverished neighborhoods, where hardship and crime are prevalent.
An important story that doesn't make the news is the psychological effect the constant violence has on school-aged children. The violence has become such a problem, and the threat of children's endangerment so real, that the city has officially designated certain routes for safe passage; these are intended to provide students with a safe route to school everyday. Nevertheless, many of my students have voiced their fear of being attacked and killed.
