My classroom is filled with a group of phenomenal sixth graders! Many of them do not live in print-filled or literature-filled home environments. Because of this, they hungrily attack my classroom library, seeking out adventures in the books on my shelves. My classroom is their haven to feel safe and to seek knowledge.
Aside from being a Title 1 school with a high number of ELL students, our school is entering its 3rd year of Program Improvement (PI) due to the fact we have been unable to meet our API goal in all of our student sub-groups. The majority of our students come from very impoverished homes, living below the poverty line. Additionally, English is a secondary language for many of them. It would be great if they could bring a book home every night to in order to improve their literacy level as an alternative to playing on line or on their game consoles.
