I am writing to you not only as a teacher, but also as a basketball coach trying to make a difference in our community. As part of our overall school mission, we are entering the fourth season of our basketball team with 13 boys in the fourth and fifth grades that emphasizes academics, attitude, effort, & excellence, rather than wins and losses. Last year our program saw every player pass all three of their TAKS State Tests and an amazing change in the players' attitudes. By collaborating with teachers, parents, and the administration, these great strides in their overall academics and attitudes have been made possible. All of the players participate in the free-lunch program, and many come from home situations where academics are far from a priority. All of my players come from single-parent homes and none of their parents are college graduates. With your help, these young men will rise above their situations, go to college, and learn to be successful in the game of life.

About my class
