I teach in an inner city school and like many city high schools, our school lacks basic resources, including copying facilities, paper, pencils, and air conditioning. Our student population demographics are approximately 86% African-American and approximately 71% low-income. Our high school is a non-selective, neighborhood school and we have pushed to make it become one of the top performing schools in the city. Despite these challenges, my students are wonderful, enthusiastic juniors and seniors who are excited to learn Pre Calculus and AP Calculus. They have a variety of diverse interests and talents, ranging from art to engineering, but all of them want to be successful in high school, earn college credit and be prepared to compete in college courses.
Our students are some of the brightest and most talented young adults in the city and I am proud to be part of their lives.
