My students are bright, talented and joyful high schoolers. They are also incredibly perceptive, often recognizing that our school is very different from many other secondary schools. My students know the feeling of walking into old, run-down classrooms, sharing all of their supplies, being forced to leave tattered text books and materials behind in their classes for the next group of kids to use, and having very little sense of ownership. This leaves an indelible impact on my students, sending the message that their education is not their own, but rather a transient construct that will happen "to them". My students are capable of greatness, and they deserve to have access to the basic tools that will help them tap into this greatness.
