My second graders come from a neighborhood with different ethnic backgrounds. They are in the poor socioeconomic level. The parents do not speak English. For that reason, their children come to school not knowing the language. Most of them do not know how to handle a computer. As they start school in a foreign country, it is very hard for them, to the point of tears. They feel scared and frustrated. We teachers encouraged them, as well as the parents, to expose them to the English language as much as they can in various ways, including technology. Since most of the parents don't work, is hard for them to keep up with it. Being able to work with this group of kids in a more personal way during their teacher/student differentiated instruction will help them be secure of themselves. The tablets will give them the opportunity to work with their peers thinking and sharing, and at the same time, I will be infusing the tools they need to learn the language in a fun and effective way!
