My AP literature students are students who are a mix of Latino and Vietnamese heritage. Most of them are not native speakers; and yet, in the course of their education, they learned to thrive in their adoptive country. Many of them come from poor families where the parents work multiple jobs to support themselves. On top of being full time students, many of them have jobs so that they can buy clothes and supplies for themselves. Those who do not work, often have parenting responsibilities for their siblings at home; so, each of my students is overcoming many challenges to work at an advanced level.
