The students will conduct two biotechnology labs using the requested kits. The first is a restriction enzyme and DNA lab to learn about restriction enzymes that cut DNA into fragments at a specific sequence. In addition, the students will learn how bacteria is used as a host cell to make large quantities of proteins, like human insulin, using the 8-station lab kit.
It is important for students to understand the use of these tools because they are used in many applications from recognition of endocrine disorders to genetic engineering in the pharmaceutical industry. This will be the first time many of the students will have the opportunity to study DNA and proteins while using state of the art technology.
