Our students come from families who have chosen to expose them to cultures from around the world. They are immersed in a single foreign language in order to acquire a second language, and thereby, a new culture and outlook on cultures different from their own. They do, however, need more exposure to American cultural diversity, in that many of their backgrounds - combined with the region in which they live - have limited them to only a few peeks into the American experience, being that we live in suburban Colorado vs. a big, metropolitan, diverse city like New York or San Francisco. Storytelling that reaches into the traditions and folktales of cultures from around the world can help open their eyes and increase their exposure to the depth and beauty of the American experience - which is essentially a combination of all of the world's cultures under the American umbrella - distinct yet still American. Our students are inquisitive (extremely!), creative, and like a challenge.
