We meet on the rug for whole group instruction, the students use the rug to lay down to read and write on. They meet for partner and group work together on the rug.
We've had the same rug that came with the classroom from years past. It's old, dirty (even with cleaning), and fraying apart. My students spend more time on the rug then they do at their tables. Having a new, clean rug would even improve the allergies in our room. The rug that was chosen was picked by the students in by voting and graphing. My students have explained that they could write and read the color words, while identifying shapes and attributes of those shapes. How's that for thinking outside of the box?!
