Our students live in an urban area and more often than not quality preschool cannot be a part of the family budget. Therefore, most of our students were missing out on vitally important early learning opportunities that studies have shown boost academic excellence. However, in 2013, our school district repurposed a vacant middle school and now we are proud to serve 800 PreK and Kindergarten students in our community at no cost to the parents.
These students are eager to learn. They love books and cannot get enough of what is inside them. I love their excitement when they discover that an author has written more than one book. I hear them say, "Oh look here's another book about the pigeon!" (Mo Willems) or when we learn about the difference between fiction and non fiction and I hear them discussing it, "I think I'm getting a non fiction book today about lady bugs." This knowledge would not be happening if they were not at our early learning center.
