I teach in a district where half of our students receive free or reduced lunches. Technology is the language of today and tomorrow, yet few of them have access to these tools at home. For struggling middle school students, it's preferable to check out and fail then to have your peers know you can't read that word or don't know what this word means. Ebooks can offer support through dictionaries or immersion reading, without your classmates knowing you need that help.
One of the sections I have taught for that last serval years, has been an all boy class made up predominately of students who have not had the greatest success with traditional teaching techniques. When I can incorporate technology in my teaching, their engagement skyrockets. You would never know some of them have a history of failure. In the past, boys in this class have averaged two years growth in reading scores in one school year...engagement is everything.
