Our elementary school is a Title I school where over 90% of students receive free or reduced lunch. Many of the students are English Language Learners as well. My students deserve access to the same rich literary texts that ignites a passion for reading in students from high-income schools. Good books teach students not only vocabulary and literary elements -- but how to think critically, how to interpret the deeper meaning in a text and think about how it might apply to their lives.
Reading is not just a skill -- it is an experience. With a classroom library, my students won't just learn to read, but they will become READERS.
