Learning needs to be meaningful for students to take ownership of it. While we can learn music and be able to appreciate it, if we can play music, then students see the value in learning. Students in a low income area do not have the extra money to provide piano lessons on their own. Due to the aging population, many places of worship and community groups that once had many options for pianist now have pianos that sit quiet because no one knows how to play them.
Music provides students creativity and relaxation as well as engaging their entire mind in learning. Not all students are great at math or science. Those subjects are pushed and promoted to all students. Music can be seen as an elite group. While that is not always the case, music students think and process information in a different way. This creative process proves to help them with other subjects too! It makes music a win-win situation for everyone!
