Emily Dickinson knew the truth...books are far more than mere entertainment. They are transportation to other places, other times, other worlds, but more than that, even, they are warships, serving to combat ignorance and fear. Books are so important to me, and hopefully to my students as well.
I believe that in order to engender a passion for reading, I need to provide students with two basic things--dedicated time to read, and a choice of reading material. Reading time is built into our daily class period, and it is a precious, nonnegotiable part of class. I read alongside students, and I share the books I'm reading with them. The books I share with them typically have a long waiting list of students who can't wait to get their hands on them.
