My students are in grades pre-k through eighth and are from a small rural town in Maine. Roughly half of our school population relies on free or reduced priced breakfast or lunch. My students are energetic and love hands-on learning. Many of the families in this town have gardens with basic vegetables but students do not always have access to fruits and vegetables throughout the year and have never heard of or tried fruits and vegetables not grown in this region. Students here tend to bring snacks which are high in carbohydrates and sugar due to the cost of these snacks as well as the lack of education about how important fruit and vegetables are for you.
