My scholars are an amazing group of fifth graders. I teach at a public charter school on the West side of Chicago, where the student population is 100% African-American, and all qualify for free and reduced meals. My scholars' only exposure to Asian-Americans or Asians is when interacting with store owners behind Plexiglass walls at a take out restaurant, or viewing stereotypes portrayed in the media.
