My students are very diverse ethnically, geographically and socioeconomically. Most of my students have multiple ethnicities, which is normal here in Hawaii. About half travel from great distances to attend the school, some more than 2 hours each way to get the small classrooms and attention. Most students' families struggle financially. It is not uncommon to hear that a family lives in a old school bus or simple shack with no running water, but the students still maintain high academic standards and rigor. They laugh loud and play a lot of music. It is common to hear students playing their ukulele before/after school. It's a beautiful way to start the day.
