My students are mostly migrant students. Some are from Mexico. Some are from Iceland. Some are from China. Some are from Colombia. Some are from Russia. These kids are from families who are struggling to make a living. They are all here legally and attend a Rural school with more than 70% on free and reduced lunches. Some kids are here to escape the violence of the drug problems in their home countries. Some kids are here because their parents are trying to live the American Dream and work in better conditions than their home countries. For whatever reason, these kids do not speak English. Yet our state and country has determined that they have to pass an English test to move through the education system. We need tools and resources in order to achieve the goal of mastering the English language in the amount of time that we have.
