Value is the element of art that makes drawings come to life! Value is shading--making a color light, medium and dark, which makes drawing appear more realistic. Learning this skill gets the "WOW!!" from kids that we Art Teachers love to hear. Every year my students and I draw snowmen. When students learn to add value to a snowman it makes him jump off of the page rather than melting into the background.
Nearly all of my students are from low income households. I try to supplement their Art education through a scholarship program with The Worcester Art Museum, but even if they receive a scholarship class they often cannot attend due to transportation constraints. My students need engaging art materials to excite their interest in learning to create value. My students need metallic and glitter crayons, construction paper crayons, ink pads, oil pastels, and sharpie markers.
