I teach at a school with over 1,000 students and a 97% low income status. The students in my classroom are primarily raised by parents without college degrees. Some are single mothers that have to work 2 jobs to make ends meet. Most of my students struggle from the first time they reach my door. Most of them have been with a babysitter from the time they are born because parents can not afford any type of daycare which could provide some learning experiences. But amazingly, these little achievers are ready to overcome all the challenges, and become part of the "College Ready" population in the United States. Fortunately, they attend a school where the teachers are passionate about what they do, and being adequately funded, and having the materials needed to deliver a good education, we can all focus on supporting good learning experiences for our students.
