Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, my AP Literature and Composition class did not have the opportunity to read one of the most accessible novels on the AP Literature exam: 'The Great Gatsby.'
By reading this novel, students will research the history and culture of the United States during the 1920s, including art, music, and additional literature (poetry and short fiction) of the time.
This unit study addresses themes such as ambition, delusion, and materialism, as well as motifs such as relationships between people of different social classes and the value of friendship.
As students read the novel, they will identify and explain the function of literary elements such as setting, irony, and symbol. These activities will culminate in a final project that analyzes the meaning of the work as a whole.
