Students in the LIFE program are cognitively disabled. They have varying degrees of verbal communication skills and physical abilities. They struggle with academics, and often lack social skills. They attend a rural pre-k to 8 school, which was renovated within the last 10 years. Our free and reduced lunch population is at 72%. Much of their day is spent in mainstream classes with their typically developing peers, with modified work expectations. The rest of their day is developed to individualized instruction in math and reading, and in LIFE class. In LIFE class, students learn to grow food in their garden; create menus; cook and eat nutritious food; improve their social interactions and independence; take care of themselves; improve their vocational skills; and become competent at the daily chores needed to live independently. Many of the skills in LIFE class are tied to academics (ever try to double a recipe without using fractions?) to help provide concrete usage examples.
