Research shows that the ability to show steady beat, along with rhythmic sense, is connected with reading fluency.
In my classroom, we explore beat and rhythm through speech and singing. We connect first with steady beat and then explore the rhythm of words with poems, songs and word chains. We transfer these rhythms to body percussion and finally to instruments.
Tubano drums allow for students to use both hands as we explore beat and rhythm. I have large class sizes and only a few tubanos. It takes much more time for students to play as we rotate by teams. More instruments would allow for less time rotating and more time engaging!
