I work in an urban school in Knoxville, TN. Our students are racially diverse, and most of our families are economically challenged. Many of my students come from families where the parents are doing everything they can to ensure that the children have food, clothing, and shelter. There is not much left in the parents' "emotional banks" for helping and/or emphasizing the importance of education for their children. Most of my students have no access to technology except at school or at Boys' and Girls' Clubs. So, the privilege of being able to use something as sophisticated as an iPad really does encourage students to be serious and as focused as possible when they are given the opportunity.
