Many of our students are free/reduced lunch. We also have a higher number of Spanish speaking and Marshallese students when compared to our neighbor schools. The ELL program has kept a good record of exiting more than half of its students by the time they hit the 4th grade. That is probably the reason why many ELL students enroll at our school. We have also grown over the years. When I started there were only 3 grade 3 teachers. Two years later, we now have 5 teachers in our grade level. Each grade level has added on at least 1 more position since I started 3 years ago. Although this increase of enrollment has secured my position, I think many students lose out on more one on one attention by the teachers. Teachers could not keep up with many new transfer students during the school year.
As a result, I have seen students reading levels drop dramatically. Since I'm the bridge from 2nd to 4th grade, it's my job to make sure their basic reading skills are solid.
