Because students walk into our classrooms at varying ability levels, we NEED to be able to differentiate time with the teacher in small groups. In order to do this, the other students in the classroom need to have something to work on that isn't just "paperwork." I have chosen puzzles, flash cards, and several math games that can be played singly, with a partner, or in stations rotations.
Students LOVE playing games, and I love watching them "do math" and enjoying it. These games can be adapted to all levels of students that come my way, those that are behind, on level, or above level. Mixed groupings of students can work together, which gives lower students good roll models in math and higher students a chance to work with others.
