I am starting a graphic novel club (similar to comic books) to help motivate my students to read and become life long readers. So many students say they don't like to read. My belief is that they just haven't found the right book that excites them. My goal is to get reluctant readers a safe space to read and catapult them into the world of graphic novels.
Students who struggle with reading need to be reading in order to improve. I want my students to be excited about reading so that they will look at it as a fun experience, not a chore. Graphic novels have a way of hooking readers right away. The text on the page is not overwhelming and the pictures help add to the story. I want my students to read as many books as they can because their success with reading has been minimal. I find that graphic novels are fun for students to read. Once they are hooked into reading we can introduce and read more complex text.
