My class is a 7th grade group in a title 1 school. These kids are a typical middle school kids, but I find them fascinating. They seem to all want three main things - to be seen, important, and remembered.
I teach Language Arts (ELA) and hopefully a love of reading and writing. We study Phineas Gage and Edgar Allen Poe. We write poetry and celebrate with a coffee shop in which the students are served coffee and pastries and decaf (very important) coffee and then they present their poems out loud. They love this. We end the year with a culminating activity in which I teach students to get a job, and they have an actual job interview.
Our school is divided into houses. My house is the Hoka House - the house of enthusiasm. Our house celebrates life and living it fully. We believe in joy and facing new things with optimism. Students are also in classes which celebrate kindness, responsibility, vitrue and boldness.
