My students live in a rural community, where there is very little cultural diversity. They are limited in their experiences with other cultures and beliefs. My students hunger for new experiences and challenging new topics. They hunger for the knowledge of other cultures. One way to teach diversity in a community without much diversity is though literature. Students in my class learn about the world though the experiences of characters in literature. They see a new perspective through the lens of a character's experience, and in this they learn something new about themselves.
