My fifth graders are bright, creative, and enthusiastic about expressing their thoughts, opinions, and histories. My students represent a variety of racial, cultural, and economic backgrounds. This diversity reflects the larger school population - over 20 different languages are spoken at our school and students hail from over 15 different countries. We have a significant refugee population and approximately one-fifth of our students are homeless. As a result, our school has a high mobility rate. Many students cannot purchase school supplies of their own.
