Students learn best in a classroom that is warm, inviting, and "home-like." Having rugs, lamps, and plants would help contribute to setting this tone in our classroom. The rugs will be used to define two learning spaces for my second graders: one for literacy and one for math.
When students are able to move to a specific place in the classroom where instruction happens, it helps imprint the learning on students' brains.
Having soft lighting in my classroom would allow us to not rely on the harsh fluorescent lighting, helping to keep the environment calm. Using plant stands would allow us to have more variety with where plants are placed in the classroom, again, providing a homey feeling.
