Over 90 percent of my students qualify for free and reduced lunch, many lacking technology at home. Almost all of my students are English Language Learners, over half of them have recently exited our bilingual program in the last two years. My students are also brilliant; many of them will leave our school and attend selective enrollment high schools across the city. I fear that the lack of technology and exposure to it could put my students at a disadvantage in high school, when many of their peers will be on the other side of the 'technology divide.' My fundamental goal for my students this year is to get them to see themselves as mathematicians and scientists. In doing so, I want them to also be exposed to the tools and technology that such professionals use. Having an iPad in our classroom will familiarize my students to the technological skills that they will need, not only to succeed in high school and college, but in their professional careers.
